Giving Hope Through Theater

by Office of Alumni and Parent Relations | December 05, 2013
Almost 25 years after her graduation from Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC), Geri (Stepien) Campbell ’89 has seen God’s hand on her life, as He’s led her on a remarkable journey to see her dreams of Christian theater fulfilled - a journey filled with brokenness, restoration and, ultimately, hope.

“I didn’t even realize that you could use an acting career for God,” Campbell admitted, referring to the special memories she has from traveling with the 3D ministry team in 1987. “That time was life-changing for me.”

But immediately after graduation, a heartbreaking event in Campbell's life completely sidetracked her from going into the full-time ministry for which she had been preparing for four years. Devastated, Campbell went back home, angry with God and not knowing what to do next. “For seven years, I walked away from God. I felt like God hurt me and I wanted to hurt him, so I dove into sin, trying to be bad.”

But through it all, Campbell always missed God. She felt that she had committed too much sin at this point, and that there was no way back home, so she went back into secular theater, disappointed that she was no longer using her gifts for God’s glory.

In the midst of thinking that she would never serve God again, she prayed this prayer, “Lord, if you’ll take me back, I promise you I’ll use my gifts and talents to tell others that there’s always a way back home.”

She’s kept her promise.

For the past nine years, Campbell and her husband, Rich, have traveled around the country (as well as to Israel and Holland) as the founders of In-Step Ministries, sharing hundreds of original theater performances in churches, prisons, conferences and Teen Challenge centers.

At the heart of In-Step Ministries is a play written by Campbell entitled, "The Story of Gomer." Campbell wrote about Gomer, a Biblical figure from the Book of Hosea, to reflect her own testimony. Other shows created by In-Step Ministries include "Elizabeth: A Time For Truth" (from Luke 1), "Eve Remembered" about Eve on the day that Cain killed Abel, and "Philip's Basket" a story written from Philip’s point of view at the feeding of the 5,000.

Campbell is currently writing a biblical fiction novel of Gomer’s story. She and her husband plan to someday minister through their own marriage conference, which they’ve named Back to His Heart.

God has truly brought Campbell home, back to His heart, and the dreams that began to develop so long ago are now taking her to places that she never realized she could go. There is no doubt that God had a special place in Christian theater for Geri Campbell all along.
