Honoring Mayor Leo Scoda

by Office of Marketing | December 02, 2013
On November 18, Mayor Leo Scoda was honored by Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC) for his outstanding service in the borough of Phoenixville. As Scoda will be concluding 16 years of mayoral leadership at the end of this year, VFCC took the opportunity to pay tribute to his involvement in both our college and our community.

Scoda has been in office since the start of 1998. In addition to his political leadership, he taught biology at Phoenixville Area High School for 35 years, where he also coached the boys tennis team (and has done so for 48 years, culminating with his induction to the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame and recognition from Sports Illustrated).

Dr. Kevin Beery, Vice President of Academic Affairs, opened the chapel service with the words, “It’s good to give honor to whom honor is due … and we pray that will happen in today’s chapel service.”

After a performance from the VFCC Concert Choir and words of appreciation from President Meyer, Scoda was publicly esteemed by a group of his peers. Speakers that offered words of veneration included Dr. Louis Beccaria (President and CEO of the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation), Donald Coppedge (Founder of the Phoenixville Area Social Concerns Committee), and Chester County Commissioners Ryan Costello and Terence Farrell.

Dr. Meyer and the President's Cabinet presented an award of recognition to Scoda, for his outstanding years of service. Scoda was also presented a VFCC hooded sweatshirt and crested blanket, along with the title of “honorary alumnus.”

In his reflections, Mayor Scoda stated, "I made it one of my goals as mayor that I would support, whenever I could, the college here and I have been repaid ten-fold by the students and faculty with their commitment to the greater Phoenixville community through Community Service Day and the Christmas concert, and by the students who work with our local churches and our local groups – and for that I salute you."

VFCC thanks Mayor Scoda for his many years of exceptional leadership and service, for his role in our community and his partnership with our institution.
