Are you an alum of Valley Forge Christian College? Our Alumni area is made just for you.
The Internet has become the central hub of information for most people in our culture. Unfortunately, many churches have trouble making connections with folks in the digital world. What if there was an easy way for churches to reach out to those close by who are searching for a community of believers? Recently, because of alumnus Glenn Ericksen ’09 and two of his friends, FaithStreet.com makes connecting to a church a little easier and a lot more effective.
Ericksen, a Church Planting major at Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC), was working as a freelance web designer when he was introduced to Ryan Melogy and Sean Coughlin, two lawyers who had left their full-time law positions to begin a first-of-its-kind online ministry called FaithStreet. The website’s goal is simple: to be the best way to find and connect with a church.
The men began to network with the churches in New York City, and within the first year they had signed on 12% of the city’s churches and had helped thousands of people connect with a place of worship. In 2012, FaithStreet launched nationally and began connecting churches and people in communities all over the country. In the last few months over 8,000 churches have joined the site.
Using FaithStreet is surprisingly simple. Typing in a zip code or address gives the user a list of churches that can be searched based on defined preferences. “We’re trying to help relieve any anxiety by giving people the first-time church experience before they even go to a service,” Ericksen said.
FaithStreet has to approve any church that signs up to create a profile, and the church must be on their accepted list of Christian denominations, but once the church creates their account, they can update their information any time by describing their services, and adding meeting times and posting pictures. One of Ericksen’s favorite parts of the fill-in profile is the question, “What if I’m not a Christian?” The churches' unique and individual answers to this one question help to communicate much of what the church is all about.
FaithStreet works with interns and volunteers to help improve the site and communicate the importance of the site to as many people as possible. Eventually, FaithStreet hopes to connect with all of the approximately 350,000 churches in the United States.
